With the lofty serpent as garland around his neck, his ḍamaru sounding "ḍamaḍ-ḍamaḍ", Shiva did the fierce tāṇḍava dance on the ground consecrated by the water flowing from his thick, forest-like hair locks. May he shower prosperity on us.
Every moment, I am interested in Shiva, in the deep well of whose hair locks Ganga moves in rows of waves, whose forehead has a flaming fire, and who has a crescent moon on his head.
May my mind seek happiness in Shiva, who is the sportive companion of Pārvatī, in whose mind the remote expanses proliferate, whose compassionate look expels difficult obstacles, and who is all-pervasive.
May I seek wonderful pleasure in Shiva, who is the supporter of all beings, who smears colour in all directions through the lustre of the gem on the snake creeping among his hair locks, who wears a thick upper garment of an intoxicated elephant’s skin.
His footstool is greyed by the incessant flow of dust from the flowers from the heads of the gods lined up in front of him. His hair locks are tied up with the king of snakes. He has the kind of Cakora bird (the moon) on his head. May Shiva give us lasting prosperity.
May we get the wealth of siddhis from his locks of hair. Kāmadeva was devoured by the sparks of the fire flaming on his forehead. All the celestial leaders bow down to him. He is beautiful with a crescent moon on his head.
I am interested in Trilochan Shiva who offered Kamadeva to the fire on his forehead, who is the sole artist of the decorative lines on Parvati's forehead.
The throb of the great tāṇḍava has restrained the new clouds has bound the darkness of the night of the new moon around His neck, O the bearer of the river Ganges, O the wearer of the elephant hide; please extend the auspiciousness and great welfare (to us).
Whose neck has the dark luster of the universe with the glory of the fully-bloomed blue lotuses, one who destroyed Kāmadeva and Tripurāsura, the one who ends worldly existence, and the one who brought an end to the sacrifice (of Dakṣa), Gajāsura, and Andhaka and overpowered Yama; I worship that Shiva.
Who has bees flying all over because of the sweet nectar of auspicious Kadamba flowers, one who destroyed Kāmadeva and Tripurāsura, the one who ends worldly existence, and the one who brought an end to the sacrifice (of Dakṣa), Gajāsura, and Andhaka and overpowered Yama; I worship that Shiva.
His Tāṇḍava is in tune with auspicious sounds of Mridangam, who has fire on his forehead, the fire that is spreading out because of the breath of the snake wandering in whirling motion in the sky.
When will I worship Sadāśiva with equal vision towards a snake and a garland, a valuable gem and a lump of dirt, friends and enemies, eyes like a blade of grass and those like a lotus, the subjects and an emperor?
When will I be happy, living in a cave near Ganga, carrying the folded hands on my head, with my bad thinking washed away and free from my disoriented eye, and uttering Śiva’s mantra and applying his sacred mark on the forehead?
Whoever reads, remembers and says this best stotra regularly as it is said here, gets purified forever and obtains devotion in the great guru Shiva. For this devotion, there is no other way. Just the mere thought of Shiva indeed removes the delusion.
In the evening, at the end of prayers, whoever utters this stotra written by Rāvaṇa, Shiva blesses them with stable prosperity with all the richness of chariots, elephants and horses.
Thus ends the śiva-tāṇḍava-stotraṃ composed by Rāvaṇa.
