Narrative inquiry is a form of analysis within qualitative research in the social sciences that dates back to the Chicago School tradition of the early 20th century [2]

Advantages & Disadvantages

[edit]

Narrative analysis is particularly useful for acquiring a deep understanding of the ways in which a few individuals organize and derive meaning from events. Because of this, it lends itself to studies on identity and on individuals whose situations would render them outliers in quantitative research. Another advantage of narrative analysis is that narrative is more likely to provoke an emotional response from the reader than statistical data, making it useful for prompting empathy.

A limitation of narrative analysis is that since it requires such in-depth work, it is not well-suited to determining patterns or shared traits across groups.
