[edit]In 1944 Alikhanov, along with Abram A. Ioffe, and Pyotr Kapitsa successfully appealed to Vice Premier Vyacheslav Molotov to prevent Anatoly Vlasov from assuming the chair of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Physics of the Moscow State University (MSU). Instead, Vladimir Fock was appointed.[1]

When people asked me later how the Russians were doing in particle physics, I usually answered that they had discovered minus five particles. The brothers Alikhanov claimed three different kinds of “varitrons” in cosmic rays and a heavy relative of the muon; my Chinese chairman had his Dubna discovery. In a country with a well-behaved scientific tradition, the claimers of such particles would eventually retract their claims, which no one else could verify. But the Alikhanov brothers, for example, received the Lenin Prize for their unverifiable discoveries; for them to have retracted their claims would have been embarrassing to their government.

https://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/121630 The cyclotron is a new instrument, which has been already deployed in America, used for researching the nuclear atom. The first attempt to reverse engineer the cyclotron was made at the Leningrad Radium Institute. The cyclotron is working now, but it is very flawed and it is much worse than the American cyclotrons. Taking into account the experience of the Radium Institute, the Leningrad Institute of Physics and Technology (professors Alikhanov and Kurchatov) developed the new type of cyclotron, which was considered by the commission under my leadership.
