Formation

The Springfield Horse Railway Company was chartered by an act approved by the state legislature in 1863.

In 1868, the Springfield Street Railway was founded with a headquarters at Main and Hooker Streets. The first line in operation was the State Street line. By 1888 additional lines provided service to West Springfield and Chicopee. By January 9th 1893, the last horse car was ridden from Main and Bridge Streets over the old Toll Bridge to West Springfield. [1]

Springfield and Eastern

The Springfield and Eastern Street Railway was originally founded as the Palmer and Monson Street Railway in 1898. Three years later, the company was renamed to Springfield and Eastern as a connection with SSR via Ludlow opened on September 17th.
