Alison Castro Superfine

Alison Castro Superfine is an associate professor in learning sciences and in mathematics education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also is the director of the Office of Mathematics Education in UIC’s department of Mathematics, Statistics Computer Science. Her interests focus on two main areas of education research - designing learning environments for preserve mathematics teacher education to support the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching, and exploring the relationship between the design of mathematics curriculum materials and teachers’ implementation.[1]


Education

In 2001, Alison Castro earned her Bachelor of Mathematics degree at the University of California. She got her master’s and Ph.D. degrees in the University of Michigan with the major of mathematics and mathematics education in 2006.[2]


Current and Recent Funding

A K-8 Mathematics Leadership program for the teachers in South Suburban Schools. The National Science Foundation (NSF), 2019, $4.7 million, (leader of the project)[3].

The Illinois Elementary Mathematics Specialist Project. CME Foundation, 2017-2019, $200,000, (principal investigator).[4]

The Illinois Elementary Mathematics Specialist Project. The Chicago Community Trust, 2015-2017, $246,000, (Co-principal investigator with Marty Gartzman, Mary Jo Tavormina, and Lynn Narasimhan).[5]


Notable Honors and Awards

International Society of Design and Development in Education (ISDDE) Fellow (2017).[6]

Master Teaching Scholar, University of Illinois at Chicago’s center for the Advancement of Teaching-Learning Communities (2015-2016).[7]

Teaching Recognition Program Award for outstanding performance in teaching activities, University of Illinois at Chicago’s Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (2011-2012).[8]
