During chuseok, women often make songpyeon to celebrate and share with family, friends, and neighbors. Songpyeon rice cakes are often enjoyed with liquor on special occasions. The colors typically include white (흰 송편, hwinsongpyeon), green (숙 송편, ssuksongpyeon), red (송이 송편, songgisongpyeon), and yellow (치자 송편, chijasongpyeon). The historical anecdote from King Uija's reign has led songpyeon's resemblance of a half moon. The anecdote says that a turtle has once come to the palace with a carving on his back that read "Silla is half moon.", which represented a hopeful future as a half moon can only fill up. However, songpyeon represents both moons as the rice cake begins as a full moon shape and becomes a half moon shape when folded with the filling. [2][3]
