Jerusalem is an ancient city located in Levant, divided between Israel and Palestinian territory of West Bank. It is a holy city for world's major Abrahamic religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as its capital, Israel established its capital in Jerusalem and Palestine proposed East Jerusalem as its future capital. The city is spread across an area of 344 km. City limits of Jerusalem is home to 0.9 million peoples, while its metropolitan area (comprising the Palestinian part) have a population of 1.1 million peoples.

The city is regarded holy among Jews, Christians and Muslims, as well as Mandaens. In Jewish perspective, Jerusalem was location of Jewish temples and early inhabitants of Israelites are in Jerusalem, specially the City of David. The largest Jewish cemetery is in Mount of Olives. For Christians, Jerusalem is the holiest city. Jesus was brought to Jerusalem after birth and crucified in Golgothia. According to Islamic traditions, Muhammad made a Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and from Jerusalem he was ascended in heaven to meet old prophets. Al-Aqsa Mosque in Temple Mount is third most important site after Masjid al-Haram and Prophet's Mosque and was first qibla before Kaaba.

The dispute between Israelis and Palestinians, claiming Jerusalem as their capital have created complexity over the city's status. As per the United Nations, Palestine and a majority of countries, Western sector is officially recognized as Israeli part and Eastern sector as a Palestinian part. Since 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and incorporated into Jerusalem Municipality, which is considered illegal under law of international community. In 1980, Israel passed Jerusalem law declaring whole city as united or undivided capital of Israel. Though in 1993 Oslo Accords, few parts of Jerusalem were allotted to Palestinian Authority. Thus, Palestine also have sovereignty over Jerusalem along with Israel, instead have administration center in Ramallah.

Areas of Jerusalem Israeli sovereignty is highly developed. The Jewish sector is relatively rich with numerous tech industries thriving in the region, in comparison to Palestinian sector. Gradually, the Palestinian presence in Jerusalem is developing in field of business and academics.
