How I start ice skating

[edit]

During the 1986 summer holidays, before HKCEE, a friend of ours (my twin brother and me), ask us to accompany him to take ice skating lessons in Cityplaza Ice Palace in Taikoo Shing Phase 1. His intention was simple - to date a girl in the skating class. He quit very soon but we stayed in the class until we needed to stop for our HKCEE exams.

The rink moved from Ciyplaza Phase 1 to Phase 2 in 1987 and as soon as we finished our exams, we headed to the rink to enroll into skating class again. We were enrolled to Freestyle 1 class. All we could do by then was a waltz jump and a spread eagle. To our surprise, the new ice rink manager, my mentor in ice skating, Mr. Ted Wilson greeted us in person.

Recreational skating life

[edit]

Started taking freestyle skating lessons after my HKCEE exam in 1987:

  • Passed Freestyle 1 - 3 in 3 sets of group lessons in 1987
  • Passed Freestyle 4 in 1988
  • Passed Freestyle 5 & 6 in 1989
  • Passed Freestyle 7 in 1990
  • Passed Freestyle 8 in 1991

In 1989, in order to stand-out from other skaters, I start working on a cantilever (lay-back spreadeagle) in 1989. It became my signature move and I skated solo/couples for several ice shows:

  • Christmas Ice Show - Cityplaza Ice Palace 1989, 1990
  • Opening Ice Show - Rivera Ice Chalet 1989
  • Opening Ice Show - Crystal Palace 1992
