User:Woggly/Bar-Ilan vandal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to Uzi V, a Bar-Ilan student was apprehended by the university on May 31, 2006, and disciplinary charges were brought against him, presumably in relation to activities outlined here. So the vandal may no longer be active (or at least not from the Bar-Ilan IP). But for the record, here is an outline of past disruptive behavior on Wikimedia projects:

This vandal's goal is to have the IP for Bar-Ilan University permanently blocked from editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. He is responsible for vandalism on multiple Wikimedia projects in English and Hebrew. One of his established MOs is impersonating other users in order to get them blocked, often by creating accounts with identical-looking names using different unicode characters. He is almost certainly the vandal known on the Hebrew wikipedia as the Bar-Ilan impostor.

Another vandal from Bar-Ilan is known on the Hebrew Wikipedia as The Creative Vandal or "The Creative Vandal from Bar-Ilan". The Creative Vandal's MO is creating new usernames that describe his next act of vandalism. As this vandal has also acted in both Hebrew and English, it is suspected he may be the same person.

Usually edits as 132.70.50.117 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), but often impersonates other users. A sampling of his vandalism:

  • adding fake warnings
  • adding "BLOCK BAR-ILAN" to random articles
  • drawing attention to his impersonations [1]
  • Moving articles
  • Blanking articles
  • Impersonating other users, specifically User:AlexKarpman and User:Harel
  • Creating a new user account that describes his next act of vandalism (an established MO for the Creative Vandal from Bar-Ilan on WP:he)

[edit]

This is the general IP for Bar-Ilan university, and as such is also used by at least one user who is aware of the vandalism and tries to revert it. Hence the sometimes bizarre schizophrenic contributions. Note that between acts of vandalism are many good edits. Disruptive edits include:

  • Blanking pages and asking to be blocked: [2], [3], [4] etc.
  • Adding warning to his own page so as to be blocked: [5]
  • Calling attention to impostors [6] (possibly a different person)

Used to impersonate User:Bulbaboy.

The Creative Vandal

[edit]

The following users are probably sockpuppets of the Bar-Ilan Vandal. They employ the same MO as "The Creative Vandal" from the Hebrew Wikipedia (#On Hebrew Wikimedia projects): the username describes the kind of vandalism the vandalist intends to commit.

  1. User:Yonidebest page reverter
  2. User:False data restorer
  3. User:Graph Theory page blanker

See:

A sampling of the evidence presented there:

  • Moving pages randomly
  • Blanking pages, including active user pages, pages for left wing activists, Harry Potter articles and random pages
  • creating new accounts to impersonate other users (by using similar unicode characters to spell their usernames), specifically users: w:he:משתמש:AlexKarpman, w:he:משתמש:Harel, aw:he:משתמש:Felagund and User:Haham hanuka
  • erasing sigs from comments, adding his sig to comments
  • adding fake warnings
  • copyright violations
  • creating blank articles

And the list goes on and on: contributing random letters or words, removing links, reverting random edits, vandalising images, recreating deleted pages, changing name spellings of political leaders... etc. Have we said this guy is creative?

Similar activity on the Hebrew Wiktionary, Wikibooks and Wikiquote projects.

The vandal caught at 31 May 2006 and Uzi V will complain about him at Bar-Ilan discipline committee.
