Taxonomy
[edit]The family Cordulegastridae is in the insect order Odonata, part of the infraorder Anisoptera, the group for Dragonflies and sister to Zygoptera, the group for Damselflies. [1] Within the family Cordulegastridae there are 51 species amongst three different genre. These genera include Anotogaster, Cordulegaster, and Neallogaster which have 15, 30, and 6 species respectively. [1]
The name Cordulegastridae comes from the Greek kordylinus, 'club-shaped' and gaster, belly. The common name spiketails refers to the females' prominent ovipositors.[2]
