Production
[edit]Plans for another revival series (or film) have been discussed off and on since the 1991 series' demise, including a TV miniseries to wrap up the plotlines of the canceled NBC series and a feature film, co-written by Dan Curtis and Barbara Steele, utilizing the 1991 cast. In 2004, a pilot for a new WB network Dark Shadows series starring Marley Shelton as Victoria Winters and Alec Newman as Barnabas Collins was written and shot, but never picked up. The pilot has been screened at the Dark Shadows Festival conventions with Dan Curtis Productions' blessing, but has yet to surface elsewhere. This pilot was produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Curtis was writing the script by himself for independent financing in March 1998.[1]
November 2003: Efforts turned into a pilot drama for The WB, in the hopes of competing as a 2004-2005 prime-time drama. Written by Mark Verheiden. Originally aired as an NBC miniseries in 1991[2]

In July 2007, Warner Bros. Pictures announced they had purchased the film rights for Dark Shadows from the estate of Dan Curtis. Warner Bros. teamed with Johnny Depp to star in the film and work as a producer; Depp's Infinitum Nihil production company will also co-finance Dark Shadows. The actor admitted to having a childhood obsession with Dark Shadows, calling it a "dream" to portray Barnabas Collins.[3] The following November, John August said he was working "with Tim Burton on a live action project which I almost certainly will be writing post-strike. And yes, I’d love to tell you what it is. But I can’t."[4] By June 2008, it was confirmed that Burton was signed on as director with August writing the script.[5]
December 2009: Graham King says: "We've been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We're making some changes, but the film's going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year."[6]
March 2010: Filming was originally intended to start in June 2010, but was pushed to August due to Burton's commitment to Alice and Wonderland.[7]
April 2010: IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc., announced today that they have completed an agreement to release up to 20 Warner Bros. films in IMAX's format over the course of the next three and a half years (from 2010 through 2013).[8]
July 2010: Seth Grahame-Smith is hired to rewrite the script. Production is slated to begin in January 2011.[9]
October 2010: Depp is preparing to start work also in February as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows for Warner Bros and director Tim Burton, who has a script he likes from Seth Grahame-Smith.[10]
