Cancellations and controversies
[edit]Despite successfully completing a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, certain projects subsequently fell into development hell, were cancelled, or have otherwise been unreleased. Code Hero, a proposed video game that would teach players how to create their own games, was funded in February 2012 via Kickstarter. The project eventually ran out of funds and the project coordinator announced he was leaving the production in April 2014. The team was criticized for its poor money management and lack of communication with backers.
Sandswept Studio's The Dead Linger was funded in April 2012 via Kickstarter. The game remained in development for three years after the announcement. The Dead Linger was stated to be a procedurally generated world where players would fight zombies. In November 2012, it was officially announced that the game was cancelled. The studio's founded Geoff Keene stated that the production was "ambitious" and its scope much larger than his previous works. The cost of production was much larger than what was raised with Kickstarter and Steam early access sales. The alpha version of the game remained on Steam, but was noted to have several bugs.
LA Game Space was a physical space that would offer exhibitions, game streaming, and services for indie game developers. It was funded in December 2012 with an estimated opening date of May 2013. Backers were also promised various video games for supporting the Kickstarter. Though the organization itself remained active online, the physical space never manifested. While LA Game Space claimed that the video game rewards were sent out, the physical space has been delayed.
