Infinity Early College High School (Infinity ECHS) is a secondary public school in Porter, Texas, and is part of the New Caney Independent School District. Infinity ECHS partners with Lone Star College Kingwood to offer students a path to graduate with both a diploma and associate's degree.[1] Infinity Early College High School is ranked by Children at Risk, placing 11th among other secondary schools in the Greater Houston Area.[2] Niche further recognizes Infinity ECHS as a high-achieving school, awarding it an "A" rating.[3] Infinity ECHS is classified as a 3A school by the UIL. Infinity ECHS participates in UIL Cross Country and UIL Academics, and the school has achieved an academic state championship. The school colors, purple and black, are a blend of blue and red, paying homage to the former New Caney and Porter High School. The mission of Infinity is to "prepare all students enrolled to be college-ready, independent thinkers, and resourceful citizens."[4]

Infinity Early College High School offers Advanced Placement courses, as well as opportunities for students to participate in the National Honor Society, Student Council, and various other clubs. Additionally, students engage in Service Learning, a volunteer program that supports local organizations and schools.

History

[edit]

Infinity ECHS was founded in 2013, following the vision of NCISD and LSC-K leaders, Kenn Franklin and Katherine Person, who aimed to create an opportunity for residents of New Caney and Porter to earn a college degree while in secondary school. The school initially operated at New Caney High School until December 2017. In January 2018, Infinity ECHS moved to its current dedicated building, halfway through the 2017-2018 school year. This new location allows students to walk directly from Infinity ECHS to Lone Star College without the need for bus transportation. Infinity ECHS's building features 20 classrooms and a small gym, designed to provide a college-like atmosphere.[5]

Demographics

[edit]

In the 2021-2022 school year, there were 395 students enrolled at Infinity ECHS. The ethnic distribution of the students was as follows:[6]

  • 4.8% African American
  • 3.3% Asian
  • 73.7% Hispanic
  • 17% White
  • 1.3% Two or more races

Infinity ECHS achieves remarkable results despite facing challenges. Notably, 43.4% of its students are classified as 'at risk of dropping out,' and 60% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. However, the school's dedication to academic success is evident as it maintains a 100% graduation rate, and its students excel in college readiness standards. To graduate as college-ready, students must meet criteria on the TSIA, SAT, or the ACT. Infinity's students stand out with exceptional readiness rates: 98.6% are prepared in reading, 97.3% in math, and 95.9% in both reading and math.

In contrast, students at New Caney face greater challenges, with only 31% considered ready in reading, 17.7% ready in math, and 16.5% ready in both reading and math.
