The Ford class seaward defence boats were built for the Royal Navy commencing in 1951. The lead boat, HMS Shalford (P3101) was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders on the Clyde.
HMS Droxford served for a time as the tender for Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities Royal Naval Unit, and was administered by RNR Clyde. The Ship, with her compliment of two Officers, three Senior and 5 Junior Ratings <ref name="Janes83"> <and Jack Russell Data> / The vessel was used to train Honorary Midshipmen who were students of the universities and participated in coastal navigation and seamanship training along the river Clyde and west coast of Scotland.>[citation needed] HMS Beckford (P3104) was re-named HMS Dee and served as the tender to Liverpool University Royal Naval Unit.[citation needed]
