The Thompson Fire was a sizeable wildfire burning in the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County, California, during the 2024 California wildfire season.[2]

Background

[edit]

The Shelly Fire sparked amidst a heat wave described as "exceptionally dangerous and lethal" by the National Weather Service.[3] The fire's cause has not yet been determined.

Fire

[edit]

The fire sparked at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, near Shelly Lake in the Marble Mountain Wilderness.[4] Within two hours, the fire grew from 10 acres (4.0 ha) to over 100 acres (40 ha), causing an Acting Forest Supervisor, Chris Christofferson to determine the fire will be a long-duration incident.[5]

By July 4, 2024, the fire had scorched more than 313 acres (127 ha), and was reported to have noticeably less activity compared to the previous day.

On July 5th, the fire was now just under 450 acres (180 ha) and was reported to still have much less activity but remained 0% contained.

On July 6th, 2024, the fire had an increase in activity and grew to approximately 790 acres (320 ha) in size under Red flag warning conditions.

By July 7th, the fire had a very notable increase in activity, sparking evacuation orders for areas of Siskiyou County. The fire was well-established in the Kidder Creek Drainage spreading east and spotting out to 1 mile ahead of itself, causing more evacuations to be issued. By 10:45 p.m., the fire had been mapped at 3,380 acres.

The days following the increase in activity had a similar situation as the fire continued to show intense fire activity with long-range spotting, with some communities threatened. By July 9th, 2024, the fire had been mapped at 6,815 acres with 1,869 personnel assigned and evacuation warnings issued for areas near the town of Etna.
