I wrote this essay to help settle the conflict on Talk:Darth Sidious debating whether or not Darth Sidious (click "Redirected from Darth Sidious") is the same person as Palpatine.
To be honest with you, I always interpreted Palpatine as not being Sidious' alter ego, but rather a disguise created by the Force. And his true identity and backstory being not explained in the six films. It should be added in the article that this is unsettled--we should not go looking around for reliable sources proving an opinion.
Sith Name Change
[edit]If Palpatine really is Sidioidentity, then Palpatine would be his former name and Sidious only a Sith Name.To resolve the debated method of what happened when a Jedi falls to the Sith, I have used Jedi who fell to the dark side by Sidious, such as Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker, and how they were responded too after their Sith Name Change.
The reason Darth Tyrrannus (the name is never used in the six films) is referred to as Count Dooku is the same reason Darth Vader is still referred to as "Anakin" in Revenge of the Sith"-- he really still was Anakin in a way. However, I do have some quotes regarding the Jedi's awareness of Anakin's name change.
And now, Lord Vader, go to the Jedi Temple and cleanse it of all Jedi. Then go to the far reaches of the galaxy and erase all the separatists.
— Darth Sidious on the security hologram right after Anakin/Vader is seen killing Jedi Younglings..
Consumed by Darth Vader, he is. Kill him, you must.
— Master Yoda on Obi-Wan's upcoming battle with Anakin.
Along with this new knowledge, I have managed to find some Windu and Obi-Wan points from Revenge of the Sith that emphasize the main point of this essay.
This is the end of you, Chancellor Palpatine, or should I say, Darth Sidious?
— Mace Windu about to arrest Chancellor Palpatine with the rest of the Jedi.
Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil!
— Obi-Wan Kenobi in his battle with Anakin.
Ian McDiarmid is the actor for "both" Palpatine and the Emperor. The matter seems even more challenging considering the fact that the word "Palpatine" is never used in the original trilogy and the term "Emperor Palpatine", though common, is never used in the six films. I do not know a lot about the Expanded Universe story, so you will not see me making points from it, but I use the six films as a source of reliability.
