Joe Versikaitis (born 1964)Born in Venezuela, South America and Resides in Calgary, Alberta, is well known for his portraits of athletes. Versikaitis's most famous paintings have been of Theo Fleury(Calgary Flames) and that of Rob Maver (Calgary Stampeders). Together with Theo Fleury have released limited edition prints which are sold out.
As a young artist, Versikaitis took the liberty in sketching from life. Turning to sports equipment for detail whenever possible. Reading and looking at art magazines was the main source of self teaching approach. Versikaitis recalls going to the local stationery store and sitting in the corner on the floor reading drawing and painting books because he could not afford them. Photography became apart of his life growing up and the images that were displayed became his subject matter. Getting his art education through the Medicine Hat College, Brooks Campus, the ArtMedia Training center(1989) in Calgary, and of course Jr and High School Art was all the formal schooling he has received. Versikaitis is working constantly with his favorite charity KidSport and now Hockey Alberta. “ It's not just about sports art but more so creating an illusion of an athlete's moment in time.”
“ The notions of sports portraitures are my interpretation, my inspiration and my passion of an athlete portrait. Working from game experiences to my canvas I explore what a sport portrait is. Whether it’s a goalie making a game winning save or the riveting moment before a quarterback throws the ball, Joe Versikaitis strives to reveal the intricate relationship between a person and their sports habitats.
" My dream as I gain support from the Alberta communities is to be selected to render works of players for one or all the professional teams in Alberta. This would be my full time gig. I would also cherish the opportunity to create renderings for FIFA in regards to Canada's World Cup in 2026!"
