Jen Mann(1987-) is a notable Canadian artist that currently works and lives in Toronto. Her magical figurative paintings explore the concepts of beauty and wonder.
Personal Life
[edit]Mann was born September 15th, 1987 in Mississauga Ontario, Canada. Mann attended Cawthra Park SS in high school. She went on to OCAD (Toronto) and received her BFA in printmaking.
Works
[edit]Mann’s transition from printmaking to painting happened after her graduation from OCAD. The artist herself said that "Painting has always been sort of liberating for me, in comparison to print, which in the end of my four years ended up feeling...overwhelming and too controlled." Mann's first series "Fera" unfolded from this experience of lack of identity. The 2009 series were the first paintings Mann ever made. They dealt with what the artist called "feeling wild, but stifled, feeling trapped and wanting to escape."[1] In this series, women are paired with wild animals.
The next group of work that Mann created was called "Subconscious Vistas." These surreal, dreamlike paintings highlight images of men and women combined with birds, flowers, gems, and wild colors. The focus in this series is the escape from the everyday and the freedom found in that escape. Mann's series "Gathering of the Psyche" followed "Subconscious Vistas." The series is an entirely white one. Mann said the inspiration for this body of work was the idea that everything is the same, and then nothing at the same time.[1]
"Chromatic Atrophy" and "Toxic Love" were two shorts series between "Gathering of the Psyche" and Mann's most recent series called "Strange Beauties."
Made in 2013, "Strange Beauties" looks at awkward moments captured in Mann's studio with friends and family. Mann takes these discarded moments and then re-invents them, as they are seen through rose coloured glasses. Mann said that she wanted to see these moments as beautiful and give them importance.[2]
Mann is currently working on her newest series titled "Q&A." This series is sent to be in a solo show in November 2014 at Neubacher Shor Contemporary. The new series is grappling with identity and the questions one asks him or her self.
