The Yarnell Hill Fire was a wildfire that burned 8,374 acres (3,389 ha) in the U.S. state of Arizona in mid-2013. The fire was ignited on June 28 by a lightning strike.
Background and cause
[edit]Wildfires are a natural part of the ecological cycle of the Southwestern United States,[1]: 3–6 regularly burning thousands of acres in the region every year.[2]: 1 In 2013, 1,756 wildfires burned 105,281 acres (42,606 ha) of Arizona.[3]
In February 2014, the Ecological Restoration Institute (ERI) at Northern Arizona University published a study of the 2013 wildfire season in Arizona and New Mexico.[2]: 1
