Fundraising campaign

[edit]

Gaetz on July 23, 2022, gave a speech at a Student Action Summit gathering in Tampa, Florida, in which he stated that overweight or unattractive women were unlikely to become pregnant and mocked them for supporting abortion rights, saying "They’re like 5’2, 350 pounds, and they’re like ‘Give me my abortions or I’ll get up and march and protest."[2][4]

Olivia Julianna mocked Gaetz for his statements in a tweet July 24, saying "I’m actually 5’11. 6’4 in heels. I wear them so the small men like you are reminded of your place."[2] Within hours Gaetz tweeted back with a photograph of her captioned "Dander raised...", according to NPR implying he had "struck a nerve".[2] She posted to her social media for donations to the Gen-Z for Choice abortion fund, which had up until then raised $26,000, and donations to the fund reached US$1M in 72 hours.[3][4] She tweeted again at Gaetz, writing "A sitting Republican congressmen, @mattgaetz, decided that body shaming a teenager was okay. So to spite him I raised $1 million in donations to abortion funds in under 72 hours. Abortion is healthcare. Period. #ThanksMattGaetz."[2]

On July 31st, Le Monde reported the fundraiser was at $2M.[5]
