Route 1 was derived from the original Queen Anne streetcar routes that date back to 1889. The actual route in and of itself hasn't changed much in the 130 years since, running through Kinnear Park via Olympic Way W and north on 10th Ave W. It then passes along the west side of Seattle Center (QA SB, 1st Ave N NB) then takes the 1st-Broad kink to reach 3rd Avenue. From 1st & QA through to downtown is a shared corridor with Routes 2 and 13.
From 3rd & Union, daytime trips continue as a trolley 36 to Beacon & Othello (NB trips change routes from 36 to 1 at Pike St). After PM peak (and during early Sunday mornings), it's a night shuttle from Kinnear to Seattle Center only. Routing is south on QA, E on Thomas, N on 1st Ave N, layover point farside N Republican St. From here, transfers can be made to Routes 2 and 13, and the Route 15/18 is a short walk.
History
[edit]- 1940-08-11: Converted from streetcar route. Interline is 1 Kinnear-13 19th Avenue

- 1980-09-13: Trolley service resumes on the 1-Ferdinand.
- 1985-02-13: Beacon Hill restructure. The southern half of 1-Ferdinand, and 31-Seward/Beacon, get merged into new Route 36. Each Route 1 trip continues as a trolley 36.

Route 2 is a tale of two routes: the busy segment through the Central District, and the not-so-busy segment through Queen Anne. The latter was derived from the Front Street Cable Car Co.'s route. Starting at the south end of Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the route is via 6th (Routes 1 and 2 are spaced four blocks apart) and Galer to reach Queen Anne Ave N. Route 1 joins at W Roy St for the shared 1/2/13 trolley corridor into downtown.
Route 2 turns from 3rd to Seneca St via Spring St and Hubbell Pl on the eastern edge of I-5 (EB trips just run directly onto Seneca). Seneca briefly turns into Union near Seattle First Baptist Church, before hitting the Madison/12th/Union bowtie. Route 2 then continues on E Union through the Central District to 34th Avenue. It then turns north on 34th through the meandering Madrona Dr., ending at Madrona Park on the shoreline of Lake Washington.
Alternating daytime trips continue to Madrona Park from Route 13. In fact, Routes 2 and 13 parallel each other through Queen Anne(see below). During evenings, all trips run from Madrona Park to West Queen Anne only.
