The Bromborough Margarine Works was a factory that used to produced margarine owned by Unilever, located in Bromborough in the borough of Wirral, Merseyside.
History
[edit]Bromborough Margarine Works were built between 1914 and 1918 after the Lever brothers created Planters Margarine Company Ltd as a subsidiary [1].
On 9 August 1917, the Policy and Tactics Committee met to consider, amongst other items, a proposal which ‘entailed doubling the present margarine works at Bromborough’[2].
A new margarine production unit was opened on the 29th of September, 1960Cite error: There are <ref>

Location
[edit]Prior to 1917, the main works were located at Godley, but a lack of expansion opportunities lead to production rates falling and the company falling behind its competitors. The Lever brothers then looked to Bromborough, where the site was 'in every way a model Works, walls inside tiled, and so on, everything bright and clean'[3].
The location was tactically important, as it was close to a dock, which was officially opened on 17 April 1931, and was used for imports and exports for the factory[4].
