Sweden–Thailand relations refer to diplomatic relations between Sweden and Thailand. According to Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden and Thailand have tight and deep ties that are marked by intense trade and investment as well as significant cross-cultural exchange.[1] Both nations are members of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

History

Under King Mongkut's rule, Siam and Sweden signed the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation on 18 May 1868,[2] which established the two nations' diplomatic ties.[3] Since then, the two nations have consistently expanded their overall collaboration.[4]

Business

[edit]

30 years ago, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden opened the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok. Since its founding, the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce and the Swedish Embassy have consistently worked to develop events and chances to strengthen the expanding business community.[5]

Sweden and Thailand have a long and prosperous history of industrial and technological collaboration, which is demonstrated by the presence of about 70 Swedish businesses in Thailand, including ABB, AstraZeneca, IKEA, Saab, Scania, and Volvo. As evidenced by recent investments such as new production plants opened by Scania and Tetra Pak as well as a newly opened IKEA store in 2018, Swedish multinational corporations have continued to expand trade and investment in Thailand.[5]
