User:Triptothecottage/West Gate Bridge disaster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The West Gate Bridge disaster occurred on 15 October 1970, when a span collapsed of the partially-constructed West Gate Bridge over the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia. The collapse killed 35 workers who had been on or underneath the bridge at the time, and injured dozens more.

A Royal Commission found that the disaster had been caused by a flaw in the box girder bridge design, which led to buckling in part of the span's steel structure while it was lifted into place. Poor communication between the design engineers and the construction contractors
