The following is a verbatim transcription of the recorded activities of SM U-51 known to British Naval Intelligence (better known as Room 40) during 1914-1918:^[1]

SM U-51

Transcription

"SM U-51. Was completed at Kiel about March 1916, and did trials at Kiel School until the end of April when she proceeded to Heligoland. She was attached to the 2nd Half Flotilla.

2nd May - 6th May 1916. North Sea patrol, to Hantsholm with 2 Zeppelins. She was sent out with U-70 against enemy forces.

16th May - 3rd June 1916. North Sea patrol (Jutland Battle), missed H.M.S. WARSPITE with 2 torpedoes in about 56°31'N., 0°40'W.

3rd July 1916. North Sea patrol. Sunk by HMS H5 on 14th July 1916 in 53°55'N., 7°53'E."
