Oshigambo High School, Namibia
[edit]Oshigambo High School is a missionary school which was established and founded by the Finnish missionaries in 1960. It is located approximately 30 km away from Ondangwa, in the Oshikoto Region, in the Northern part of Namibia. It is a small school which consists of approximately 20 teachers and 320 students. [1]
Oshigambo High Scool-former boarding school; is known to be one of the best performing schools in the nothern part of Namibia. Regional wise, they always scope the first position. The school motto "Love your neighbour, as you love yourself."-Mark 12:30-31. reflects to the theme of the schoool as it is a church school. Attending church services every Sunday is mandatory.
Ministers, medial doctors, successful lawyers, engineers and leaders have gone to this school. Dr Solly-Amadhila, a former pupil, always awards the best students every year for their hard-work-known as "The Doctor Solly-Amadhila floating trophy.". Such events motivate students to work extra hard. [2]
Scholars mostly obtain motivational speeches from former pupils, motivational speakers and ministers like Honourable Minister Nangolo Mbumba (who once granted computers, sports equipments and a cheque). The computers are now enough for at least 70 students to have access to them. The Finnish and the Americans who visit the school also grant library books and computers.
The main school (which includes the classes, dinning hall and the boys hostel) is separated by a river; which flows from the Kunune and Angolan river. The school has experienced two natural disasters (flood) over the last 51 years. One occured in 2006 and the second was earlier this year. This causes scholars (the girls) to walk 3 km to school, because walking through the river will be at their own risk. The school has lost 1 pupil this year due to this natursl disaster. President Hifikepunye Pohamba promised to help construct a bridge, but nothing was done till this vey day. [3]
Students take part in extra murual activities such as culture dancing group, basketball, netball, volleyball, football, debate, science clubs. Some of them represent the school till national level. These activities keep students grounded and knowing that they at least have something to do after school. [4]
The 50th Anniversary was celebrated last year. Were ministers, leaders and former pupils attended. [5]
This is the Oshigambo High School-school motto.
