Foxhound has a pedigree to rival any yacht on the market today. She was built in 1935 for Ikey Bell, she was the first yacht to be built under the then new 12m Offshore International Rule. This was the era of classic racing yachts including the J class yachts, and Foxhound's racing history is full of successes in various Fastnet and Admirals Cup events. Foxhound arrived in Portugal in 1954, owned and skippered by the Hon Mrs Rachel Pitt-Rivers, after winning the Bermuda Race.

She followed the Royal Yacht Brittania on their British Isles tours and would have been the boat that both Charles and Anne learnt to sail on. [1]

History and Ownership

[edit]

This famous yacht was built for Isaac Bell to the 12-Metre rule, but with a heavier and more powerful hull, and subsequently won the Fastnet race in 1939 with Charles Nicholson at the helm.

Bloodhound was a star of the Cowes Regatta until she was bought by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1961. Throughout the 1960s, Bloodhound accompanied the Royal Yacht Britannia on cruises throughout Europe and was said to be Prince Philips' preference to Latifa. The yacht was sold to a private buyer in 1969 because Prince Philip thought she was too expensive to run.

She was sold to Robert Cook and retired from racing until Robert Cook junior rekindled her spirit at the classic yacht regattas between the mid eighties and 2001, often skippered by the late and great Sir Peter Blake, an Admirals cup winner.

Restoration

[edit]

The restoration from 2004 til recently in a barn at Sturminster Marshall in Dorset, was undertaken by her present owner Tony McGrail of Poole. The steel frames have been replaced as well as 10,000 fastenings and 30% of the planking.[2]
