Acceptable values for y:
- "remaining disputed until the arrival of Bolsheviks."
- "remaining disputed for the next two years."
- "remaining disputed until Bolsheviks took over the region."
Alternatively, to avoid repetition, we could reword the previous subclause:
- Nagorno-Karabakh emerged as a disputed region when Armenia and Azerbaijan gained independence in 1918, remaining so until the arrival of Bolsheviks/until Bolsheviks took over the region/for the next two years.
Acceptable values for x:

- granted to

- handed to
