The art of reuse

The art of reuse, stylized as the art of rə use is a Toronto based art collective and organization founded by Sean Brown, Courtney Eastman, Brittney MacKinnon, Othello Grey, Robert Bowen and Zoran White in December of 2009. They create one day thrift boutiques called the “Interim” (stylized as ĭn | tər | ĭm) which nests in different spaces- such as coffee shops and art galleries. Each new “Interim” possesses its own unique aesthetic and no item is priced over $50USD.

BACKGROUND

The groups’ original goal was to create a one-time event where they would sell second hand fashions to their family and friends. Soon they realized there was the potential to redefine the negative connotation that thrift stores often carry. They saw the opportunity to modernize thrift stores and bridge the gap between the consumer on a budget and the fashion forward.

INTERIM On April 29th, 2010 the art of reuse opened its first interim thrift boutique within a Toronto antique and salvaged art shop called Smash; it included fashion, accessories and nic nacs for Men, Women and Children. After being opened for fifteen minutes the stores entire inventory sold out. As word of mouth spread about The Art of Reuse and their Interim, their following began to grow. Complex.com & Marcus Troy have listed Interim as one of Canada’s 10 most stylish stores. On September 23rd, 2010 the second Interim thrift boutique was opened within The Mascot coffee shop in Toronto. This time The Art of Reuse prepared a steadier shopping experience by doubling their inventory and giving consumers and more intimate setting.

MAGAZINE While marketing and promoting the second Interim thrift boutique, the first issue of The Art of Reuse magazine was in its development stages. Along with profiles of independent shops and art from around the world, it contains thrift fashion editorials, musician spotlights and photographic works all done by members of the group. The magazine is operated and published by The Art of Reuse and the first issue is slated to be on newsstands during the first quarter of 2011 (although list of stockists has not been released).

Alongside the preparation of a coming Men’s shop, a second documentary titled ‘The Interim’ is in development for release in spring 2011. It is the follow up to their first visual effort directed by Neon Gorilla entitled (The Prelude to Interim).
