It was confirmed on January 29, 2008, by Variety, that Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company would be rebooting the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.[3] Shortly thereafter, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Robert Englund would not be reprising his role as Freddy, and that Samuel Bayer was hired to direct.[4] Jackie Earle Haley will instead portray Freddy Krueger[5] and Rooney Mara will play the role of Nancy Thompson.[6] Other confirmed cast members include Thomas Dekker as Jesse, a jock on the swim team,[7] and Kyle Gallner as Quentin.[8] Kellan Lutz is in final negotiations to play Dean, "a well-liked, well-off high school jock".[9] Connie Britton will also star as Nancy's mother.[10] The movie is currently being filmed in various locations in Illinois.[11]New Line has contracted with two high schools in Illinois, Elk Grove High School and John Hersey High School to use their location for scenes in the remake. According to the Principal of Elk Grove High, Nancy Holman, the studio contacted schools across the nation looking for one that had a swimming pool. Although filming will take place at both schools, neither will be identified by name. The studio also plans to cast 200 extras for various school scenes, including one in the pool, but is requiring that all auditioning students be at least 16-years old.[12] School board President Lenore Gonzales Bragaw was initially apprehensive about the deal, as she disliked the idea of the studio filming "scenes of violence" at the schools; Bragaw agreed to the filming after being assured that no one would be killed during the swimming scenes.[13] Principal photography for the film began on May 5, 2009,[14]
