Grammar

[edit]

If I rephrased an article, my edit summary will say "(copy edit)". Whenever I paraphrase, I retain everything the article said, except for evident vandalism.

If I rephrase an article, I will apply the following rules and principles:

  • Rule 13. Make the paragraph the unit of composition: one paragraph to each topic.
  • Rule 14. Use the active voice.
  • Rule 15. Put statements in positive form.
  • Rule 16. Use definite, specific, concrete language.
  • Rule 17. Omit needless words.
  • Rule 19. Express co-ordinate ideas in similar form.
  • Rule 20. Keep related words together.
  • Rule 21. In summaries, keep to one tense.
  • Rule 22. Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end.

(No, this is not part of Wikipedia:Elements of Style improvement project, which aspires to revise some commonly used phrases whose words can be omitted.)

If the article has fibs and bad grammar, then my first edit will be my "(copy edit)" and my second will remove the falsehood. Sometimes, when the article is truly confusing, I put the {{confusing}} tag or seek clarification on its Talk page.

Style

[edit]

If I tear down an article — my edit summary will say "(style edit)" — I will do it by applying my favourite Wikipedia style guidelines:
