The 2018 Classic Tetris World Championship was the ninth edition of Classic Tetris World Championship which took place between 20 and 21 October 2018 in Portland, Oregon. Joseph Saelee won the tournament after defeating the seven-time champion Jonas Neubauer.[1]

Format

[edit]

The competition takes place over two days, with the Qualifying Round and Round Zero on the first day and the Main Event on the second. Contestants are allowed to bring their own controller, but it must be an original, unmodified NES Controller.

Qualifying Round

[edit]

Qualifying takes place on a fixed number of NES stations. Entrants play "Type A" Tetris, starting on level 9 or higher, and are ranked based on their final score. Once an entrant's game ends for any reason, his/her total must be recorded by a tournament scorekeeper in order to be valid. Entrants may make as many qualifying attempts as they wish, but must return to the back of the waiting line for each one. Additionally there is the option to pay small amount of money and rent a station for an hour.

Winners of "Qualifying Events" held before the event are automatically qualified to the bracket, but their seedings are still determined by their Qualifying Round result. These winners are:

  • Harry Hong (West Coast Qualifier)
  • Josh Tolles (Midwest Qualifier)
  • Kristen Stein (Southern Qualifier)
  • Christopher Brady (East Coast Qualifier)
  • Jeff Moore (Desert Qualifier)

The 5 "Auto Qualifiers" above and next 35 best scorers in Qualifying Round qualified for the bracket. Top 24 scorers of the 40 qualified directly to the Main Event, while the bottom 16 went to Round Zero.[2]

Round Zero

[edit]

Bottom 16 qualifiers are paired in best-of-three matches. Eight winners advanced to the Main Event.

Main Event

[edit]

The Main Event is a single-elimination tournament consisting of five rounds of head-to-head matches (six if including Round Zero). All matches are best of three games, except the best-of-five final match.

For each game of a match, both players begin to play at the same time on separate systems, and the game continues until one of the following occurs:[2]

  • Trailing player tops-out (leader wins)
  • Leader tops-out; trailing player fails to match that score before topping-out (leader wins)
  • Leader tops out; trailing player passes that score (trailing player wins)
