The Three Forks Herald is a newspaper, founded in 1908 and published weekly ever since. Published Thursdays, it serves Montana's "Headwaters Empire," a 500-square-mile area surrounding the headwaters of the Missouri River, including the communities of Three Forks, Manhattan, Willow Creek, Amsterdam/Churchill, Harrison, Pony, Toston, Townsend -- and extending east to the Belgrade and Bozeman areas.

The Herald also publishes the monthly Southwest Montana Farm & Ranch News, an annual Headwaters Empire Visitors Guide, and other sections and special publications.

The Three Forks Herald was founded by Paul S. Dorsey, who published the first issue September 24, 1908 from a tent in the newly established town of Three Forks, Montana. Headlines included, “Three Forks – A Coming Metropolis”; “Milwaukee Land Co.’s Lot Sale"; and "Establishing New Street Grades and Building New Telephone Lines." Dorsey arrived in Three Forks Sept. 16, 1908, the day before the Milwaukee Road's auction of lots that marked the creation of the town.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).

That first issue was a four-page tabloid set word by word with hand-set type and was published in a tent on Main Street — one of the first established businesses in the new city. The second issue, according to the archives, "was a little late when a high wind came along and took the tent."Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).

In the first issue, Dorsey made the following pledge, which the subsequent publishers of the newspaper strove to keep for more than a century: "...to work for the development of all the territory tributary to the headwaters of the Missouri, and especially for the growth and permanent prosperity of Three Forks."Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).
