Pirellula is a marine genus of bacteria within the order Planctomycetales. Its first representative was described in 1973 as similar to Pasteuria (Staley, 1973, http://rparticle.web-p.cisti.nrc.ca/rparticle/AbstractTemplateServlet?calyLang=eng&journal=cjm&volume=19&year=1973&issue=5&msno=m73-100) and later reclassified as Pirellula.
The genome of Pirellula was fully sequenced in 2003, and is the largest sequenced circular prokaryotic genome at 7.14Mbp. The presence of genes for lactic acid fermentation was unexpected for this organism. (reference Glockner paper, 2003, http://www.pnas.org/content/100/14/8298.full.pdf+html)
