Hilda Hope McMaugh was an Australian aviator and nurse. In November 1919, she became the first Australian woman to earn a pilot's licence.[1]
From the town of Uralla in northern New South Wales, McMaugh enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 26 August 1916, during World War I. She embarked from Sydney on 29 December of that year, on the HMAT Themistocles, and spent three years as a nurse in Cairo military hospital. After the war concluded, she
McMaugh has been characterised as a "forgotten heroine", and her relative lack of recognition has been cited as an example of sexism in historical coverage.
