What is Facial Recognition and why it is important[3]?
Facial recognition system is a technology that can identify a person from camera by digital images. This technology convert people’s faces into readable databases for computers, and there are various methods that can realize this operation. According to the article “Face Recognition Methods & Applications”, there are three major methods of this technology: holistic matching which uses linear discriminant analysis and independent component analysis; structural method which can identify face by local features like eyes, nose, or mouth; hybrid method which use 3D images of face by capture a face, determine a location and size of face, and take measurements to make a template. Different methods could effect the accuracy of different applications.
There are various applications on facial recognition, and the popular one should be used for security and law enforcement purposes. Staff in the airports use this technology to verify people’s identification by comparing their passports to the database in computer system. Law enforcement agencies use this technology to locate suspects and arrest them in time. Currently, several states in the U.S. have used it to verify individual’s ID. These facts indicate that facial recognition system is significant in our society.
