Lily Isaacs is an American Christian musician and matriarch of The Isaacs, a bluegrass Southern gospel group.
Early years
[edit]Both of Isaacs's parents were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, [1] her father at Buchenwald[2] and her mother at Bergen-Belsen.[1] The impact of that experience on her was such that she said, "I was more tied to Judaism through the Holocaust than I was the actual religion itself."[3] She explained that her family was not Orthodox Jewish (or very religious in any way), but the fact that members of her family suffered and died during the war formed a strong bond with the Jewish cause. When she was a teenager, she was essentially an agnostic, unsure of what to believe.[3]
Isaacs became an American citizen when she was 9 years old, making her a dual citizen of the United States and Israel.[4]
