Geerten M.M. Michielse is a Dutch tax professional. He designed tax systems and drafted tax laws in many countries around the world. He started his professional life in academia first as an assistant professor in tax law at the University of Tilburg (Netherlands), became an associated professor in comparative tax law at the University Paris I-Sorbonne (France) and later the tax department of the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) as a tenured professor in tax law. He is a long-term visiting scholar at the Economic University in Vienna (Austria)[1] and gave guest lectures at various renowned universities in the USA, Europe and Asia.
Since 1999, Geerten worked at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. First as senior counsel in the Legal Department where he was responsible for drafting tax legislation in several member states. His main achievements were his support to the Egyptian 2005 tax reform and his participation in the Troika team that was established to help Greece to overcome its financial crisis in the early 2010s. Since 2018, he is assisting the government in Uzbekistan to reform their tax system into a modern system geared towards a market economy. He has worked in over 50 countries for the IMF.
