T Cecil is an American art rock and indie-rock band from Houston, TX. The members include David Loftin, Cody Boyer, Alex J. Ross, and Shannon Furr.

Formation

[edit]

David Loftin (vocals, guitar) began playing piano as a six-year-old boy at a local studio. He was taken to bluegrass jam circles and thrown onto bass or guitar to be taught on the fly. He picked up tuba in middle school and played through high school. During David’s sophomore year, he to join a ska band that quickly gave up on the genre and began writing their own indie math rock as Broken Dream Boat with drummer, Alex Ross, until 2012.

After high school, David pursued a degree in music and started a new band, The Hecklers with Eric Nuncio and Cody Boyer. The band played in Texas for a few years, releasing two albums, and in 2015 decided to make the move to Nashville to find a better scene for the band. The Hecklers played there unsuccessfully for nine months and added another member. David began to lose creative control and moved home to start a project he could direct. He reached out to friends he had musical experience with and made it clear this would be his project. The others agreed. For the most part.

Cody Boyer (guitar, synth): David and Cody met in elementary school. Sharing a love for video games and Jimi Hendrix, the two stayed close until they picked up instruments a few years later, David on bass and Cody on drums. They formed a band with Kynan Horton-Thomas called Elephant Shoes that never got off the porch, playing one party there.

After high school, Cody joined a few bands including Beach Bones and The Goonies with Derek Silva and later Fabian Silva, who then became Mantra Love, all the while still occasionally jamming with David. When David graduated high school, he approached Cody about playing on a regular basis and formed The Hecklers. Cody performed on both albums and many shows but when it came time for the band to move to Nashville, he couldn’t follow along and stayed to play with Mantra Love until 2016. Cody and Mantra Love parted ways just before David moved back. Knowing Cody had been wanting to, David offered Cody a chance to play guitar in a band.

Alex J. Ross (drums): David and Alex met freshman year of high school in band while comparing the weight of their instruments, being 5th bass and tuba. The two bonded over video games and music. In 2010, Alex and his friend asked David to join what become Broken Dream Boat, which after David’s departure in 2012 released two EPs before they disbanded in late 2013.

Alex bummed around as a Craigslist drummer for a while, playing with early iterations of MCG in Austin, and continues to play with Polar Breaks in San Marcos. David kept in contact with Alex along the way and knew Alex was looking for more projects. He invited Alex to join in on a new project and gave him full control of his drum parts.

Shannon Furr (bass): Shannon met David in daycare. They then met each other again in high school band. Sometime after high school, David and Shannon became friends. After David’s first choice for bassist failed to see David’s new project through, he jokingly asked Shannon if she would play bass, since he knew he could trust her. After a few days, she took him up on the offer and began learning bass guitar. A month and two days later she played her first show.

Career

[edit]

In 2016, David Loftin began recording many of the songs that would become T Cecil, the band's self-titled debut album. David Loftin, Alex J. Ross, and Cody Boyer also performed live with early iterations of their songs in San Marcos and Houston.

Joining up with other members, Loftin pushed forward his vision for the band, as he discussed on KTRU in January 2017[1] and KTSW-FM 89.9 in April 2017.[2] The band also went on to perform in KTSW-FM 89.9's music festival MR Fest in 2017.[3] Through 2017, the band continued to play around Texas.[4]

In 2018, the band took a step back from live shows to work on their second album, This Feels Far Enough, set to be released in 2019.
