History
[edit]In 2013, since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2012 violence resumed in Lebanon, Jocelyne Saab is trying to find new ways to fight. Embarrassed by the lack of diffusion in the Lebanese cinemas of Asia, she launches in 2013 a vast program for a cultural resistance film festival, which she seeks to program throughout Lebanon, without distinction of class, community, spoken language. The three editions of the festival have allowed the Lebanese to see films from all over Asia and the Mediterranean, in places as diverse as Beirut, Zahle, Saida, Tripoli or Tire, in multiplexes as in cinemas still in restoration, reopened shortly before their closure during the war.
"The idea of setting up a film festival in Tripoli came from the city of Tripoli itself, from the unbearable violence that in recent months has made a clean sweep of everything and put Lebanon in a state of disintegration ..." The cinema makes it possible to reconstitute what the war destroys, just as it makes it possible to open minds. Cinema makes it possible to reconstruct bits of memory by making people reflect on what has happened. Hence the choice in our poster, red spindles that start from the head to open outward. The heads are gray, drawn by Walid Aouni in pencil, as in the hope of finding the gray matter that we miss. "Jocelyne's comments collected by the Cultural Agenda, November 12, 2013.
"Cultural resistance is not the weapon of propaganda or screaming slogans. Yet the name of undertaking, "Cultural Resistance", seems to be one of them. The indescribable, unbelievable, moving life that thinks, and how is co-opted between many becomes thought of all moving thoughts. It is not a slogan: it is a banner, an empathic rallying flag. In this respect, the graphic designers who surround Jocelyne Saab communicate a particularly significant visual sensitivity of her open project to the multiple. International certainty: only cultural resistance, because it is a peaceful response when culture is attacked on all sides by arms and societies as they have become, all over the world, can overcome, because its The place is not that of power but of existence, that of serenity, the random against fatality. Reviews
[edit]"Although Tripoli has never regained its pre-war vitality, the three-thousand-year-old coastal town, home to a complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer, has a long cultural tradition. "Before the war [1975-1990], there was a real craze of the Tripolitans for cinema and entertainment: theater, singing, whirling dervishes," says Joumana Chahal Timery, president of the Association for the safeguarding of the heritage Tripoli (ASPT), which lives between Paris and Lebanon. In the 1960s, there were twenty cinemas, side by side in the center of Tripoli, frequented by all social strata. Debates took place after the films. We ended up having dinner and then dancing in cafes after the screening. All this life stopped with the war. "
This tradition, the Tripoli International Film Festival hopes to revive it. The first edition, crazy bet given the tensions and adventure often solitary she represented for its organizer, the director Jocelyne Saab, is an act of cultural resistance.
[...] In addition to screenings in the only cinema that now counts Tripoli, films are also programmed at the university, by desire to reach a less elitist public. Sessions are finally organized in Beirut, but it is Tripoli that is in the spotlight. "
