In 1990, a proposal to observe Native American Day was introduced to the state legislature, to be observed annually on the second Monday in October. [2] [3]

Tribes and reservations

There are nine Indian reservations in South Dakota, each home to a different federally-recognized tribe. Together with the reservations in Nebraska and North Dakota, they are managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs's Great Plains Regional Office.[1]
