Eastshade is a first-person, open-world adventure game developed and published by Eastshade Studios. It is a sequel to Leaving Lyndow, a shorter game published in the previous year by the same developer.
Plot
[edit]Eastshade puts the player in a role of a self-named painter who is shipwrecked on the island of Eastshade while on a journey there. The protagonist, starting in the port city of Lyndow. The painter recalls that his mother once went to Eastshade, and wishes for the painter to paint painting in four particular locations, which constitutes the main quest of the game. The painter must explore other portions of Eastshade, interacting with its inhabitants, performing various tasks for them, learning of their stories, and painting paintings for them.
Gameplay
[edit]The game is played from the first-person perspective. The player is free to explore the island of Eastshade, though some areas are impossible to enter without first acheiving tasks (for instance, the first obstacle the player faces is a toll bridge.) The player may collect materials from nature and use them to craft canvases and other tools. Some plants may also be used to synthesise teas, most of which has provides the painter with effects akin to a photographic filter. Interaction with other characters is performed via dialogue trees. The day-night cycle plays a role in some quests, and also limits exploration during nighttime without a coat due to low temperature.
Development
[edit]Eastshade Studios stopped development of their larger title Eastshade to make Leaving Lyndow, with plans to continue Eastshade once Leaving Lyndow released.[1] The Developer mentioned in a video addressed to fans of Eastshade that the reasons for Leaving Lyndow's development were three-fold: They wanted experience shipping a game before attempting to ship their much larger title Eastshade, they wanted to use Leaving Lyndow's revenue to supplement Eastshade's funding, and they thought the game would enrich the Eastshade universe.[2]
Reception
[edit]Eastshade received "generally favourable" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic [3]. Critics praised the beauty and ..., but it was criticised for the presence of many technical bugs.
