Evaluate an article
[edit]This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.
- Name of article: Temple University
- I chose to evaluate this article because it's a topic I am very familiar with and can provide quality feedback on what this page needs
Lead
[edit]- Guiding questions
- The articles intro provides a clear and concise description on the subjects origins.
- The first (1/2) intro paragraph describes the history of the campus. The second (2/2) intro paragraph describes the university's achievements.
- The information presented in the lead is expanded upon later in the article. There is also table of contents box directly underneath the lead.
- There is a slight amount of unnecessary information in the introduction paragraph which can be saved for a later section in the article.
Lead evaluation
[edit]The Lead section describes Temple University from a historical standpoint. This is a good, unbiased intro. The second paragraph in the lead could be shortened. The trivia knowledge of the NCAA seems random and unnecessary for an intro. It would be better saving this information for the sports section of the article.
Content
[edit]- Guiding questions
- The article's content is relevant to the subject. The page is for Temple University which casts a wide net to include all things temple related whether it's sports, academics, clubs and organizations, etc.
- From what I've read, most of the page's content is from 2018.
- I have not found any content that should be removed entirely from the article however there should be more background history on some the sub categories added to the page. (e.g. The TECH Center).
Content evaluation
[edit]There is a lot of content here to go off of when trying to learn about the campus. Some information, such as construction projects, needs to be updated. I can think of a few sections that can be added that are not listed in the article such as clubs and organizations and student recreational facilities, and history of various landmarks and structures found on campus.
Tone and Balance
[edit]- Guiding questions
- The article is neutral in it's content.
- There may be some biassed content leaning towards the football and basket ball teams. These are two sports in college that are mostly seen as spectacles. With that being said however that doesn't mean that the other sports (and extra curricular student organizations) don't matter.
- There are no bias opinions or one sided information towards or against the campus displayed here.
- The article does not try to persuade anyone to be or not to be in favor of the university. There are even comments on the talk page stressing to new editors that this page is NOT an advertisement for Temple.
Tone and balance evaluation
[edit]Overall this article does not try to persuade anybody or change opinions. It is only serving as source of information about the university.
Sources and References
[edit]- Guiding questions
- All of the sources are reliable and trustworthy. I'm not sure if this rule applies here but some of the links are from Temple University's website but only to serve as information on the subject. It's not promotional.
- The articles I have looked at seemed very thorough in their goal to inform on the subject.
- The sources are current. These are website that are constantly updating. (e.g. The article on Lew Klein's death)
- I checked five links at random and that handful of links still worked.
Sources and references evaluation
[edit]Many of the sources used in this article is written under Temple's own website which if the information was presented in a promotional way would create a conflict of interest. Overall though, these sources provide thorough amount of content for the article.
Organization
[edit]- Guiding questions
- The article has substance to it yet keeping the information in a concise manner while also presents its information clearly and understandably.
- After reading through this article a few times, I did not find any spelling/grammatical errors.
- The article is very well organized. There are a few sections that could be added such as extra curricular activities and recreational facilities on campus.
Organization evaluation
[edit]This article has excellent organization. The content is neatly displayed and can easily accessible. Many of the paragraphs have an image related to the topic cornered next to it.
Images and Media
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Most photos displayed are in direct relation to the subject being talked about.
- Images are well-captioned.
- Most photos are labeled with CC BY-SA 3.0/4.0, Attributed, or Public Domain.
- All images are laid out on the right side of the screen. They are a little hard to see but that's only to leave room for the information in the article.
Images and media evaluation
[edit]The images presented here give a deeper understanding of the campus for someone who has never been to the campus before. With that being said, some images of the buildings are not as good as they could be. There could be more varying photos of the campus presented.
Checking the talk page
[edit]- Guiding questions
- To my surprise, I found some unprofessional conduct in the talk page. (e.g "Editing this ugly article"). Most of it however contains excellent discussions on whether or not to include crime rate on the page or what section should hold the notable alumni.
- I do not know how to find this information. (Article Rating and WikiProjects).
- This talk page contains a lot of critique on other editor's entries. The critique and discussion is to accomplish the goal of making the article the best it can be.
Talk page evaluation
[edit]The community of Wikipedia talk pages seem to be very helpful and insightful on editing. I see a great amount of teamwork involved to keep up with an ever changing subject. This talk page serves as a good example for what talk pages should look like.
Overall impressions
[edit]- Guiding questions
- This is very well rounded article and judging by the talk page, it took years to get it in the condition that it is in now.
- The articles strengths are found in its organization. It has an easily accessible layout and information can be found quickly by inserting sub-categories in to already categorized sections. Each sub-heading is in bold print making it easy to scroll quickly through the article and get a sense of the basics of the subject.
- The article can be improved by adding other sections focussing more on other aspects of the campus. The athletics section is missing a lot of the sports featured at Temple as it only features Football and Men's Basketball.
- As stated before, this is a well rounded article and very much developed. However there can be room for improvement with more information on extra curricular activities, other sports, residents of North Philadelphia within the area, and and other aspects of the campus life.
Overall evaluation
[edit]This article is well developed but can be improved upon by adding more detailed content that gives the read a better understanding of Temple's community.
