U Pein Bridge is the world longest teak bridge and it is situated over a large lake, named Taung Tha Man Lake at Amarapura Township, Mandalay Division, Myanmar. It links Amarapura Township, the old Capital of Myanmar, to Yatanarpon University. It is famous as a wonderful bridge with beautiful sights. The construction of bridge started in 1849 and it took 2 years to finished: it was completed in 1851. Now, it is over 160 years old bridge but still strong and beautiful.
History
[edit]In AD 1846, a young prince became a king and he was known as King Bagan . He showed his royal favor upon his childhood friends as well as playmates and household servents, Bein Sab who is the Governar of Amarapura City and U Pein who became a high-ranking clerk of Amarapura City.
In AD 1849, Bein Sab and U Pein requested King Bagan for timber of old residential quarters of the Royal Family at Ava, the Old Capital before Amarapura, and Sagain to make the bridge across the Taung Tha Man Lake from the point near the Kyauk Taw Gyi Image on the east bank to the point near Taung Min Gyi Image on the west. King Bagan commissioned them to build the bridge.
U Pein supervised the construction of the bridge. For that reason people named the bridge as U Pein Bridge, later. There is no evident that can proof the original purpose of the bridge. Whatever the purpose was, the bridge makes more comfortable people around Taung Tha Man Lake in transportations.
