Samuel Pearson (1808 – 1894) was an English monumental mason, many of whose signed gravestones stand in the churchyard of St Robert's Church, Pannal, in North Yorkshire, England.
Background
[edit]Pearson came from an agricultural family who lived in Pannal, West Riding of Yorkshire, for several generations, and were buried there. His paternal grandfather was Matthew Pearson, who lived to the age of 112.[nb 1][1][2] His wife was Phoebe Pearson née Raper.[nb 2][3]
Pearson's father was Thomas Pearson, of Lunds Green, Pannal, North Riding of Yorkshire. He was an agricultural labourer, then a farmer.[nb 3][4][5] On 17 May 1801 at St Peter's Church (now Leeds Minster) he married Elizabeth Robinson, daughter of farmer John Robinson of Beckwith.[nb 4][1][6] At their marriage they were both illiterate, signing the certificate with a mark.[7] They had three children.[1][8][9] After his first wife died in 1833,[10] he married Elizabeth Harrison at St Robert's, Pannal, on 16 March 1836.[nb 5] Thomas Pearson was still illiterate at this time, and so was his wife, both signing their names with an X.[11]
Samuel Pearson, the third child of his father's first wife, was born on 1 January 1808, at Bramley, Leeds.[nb 6][9] He was registered in the Baptist Church, Bramley, in 1808,[9] then baptised in the Anglican St Robert's Church, Pannal, in 1815.Cite error: A <ref>

(see the help page). His siblings were Hannah Pearson,[nb 7][8] and agricultural labourer Thomas Pearson.[nb 8][1][4]
On 29 December 1838 at St Robert's, Pannal, Pearson married Ellen or Helen Darnbrough, daughter of labourer Joseph Darnbrough.[nb 9] They were both illiterate at the time of their marriage, having signed the certificate with a cross.[12][13] They had eleven children: Mary,[nb 10][12][14] Joseph,[nb 11][14] Matilda,[nb 12][14] Samuel,[nb 13][14][15] Ellen,[nb 14][14][15] Esther,[nb 15][14][15] Sarah Elizabeth,[nb 16][15] William Darnbrough,[nb 17][15][16] Jane Hannah,[nb 18][15][16] Eliza Ann,[17][15][16] and Pamela.[nb 19][15][18] During their married life, Pearson and his wife lived in the same house, near Pannal Hall, in Pannal.[12][16][19] Their three sons, Joseph, Samuel and William Darnbrough, were stonemasons.[15][18]
Pearson died at Pannal on 14 December 1894, of acute bronchitis (a potential sign of occupational silicosis),[20][21]. He was buried in the churchyard of St Robert's, Pannal, on 16 December 1894.[22]
Career
[edit]Pearson's produced a large number of hand-carved gravestones, many of which remain standing in St Robert's Church, Pannal. His earliest signed gravestone, the tombstone of John Webster of Pannal, was executed when Pearson was 17 years old, is dated 1825. The signature, which does not change in style during his career, implies that he was working from at least 1825 on his own account. It is to be understood that, since Pearson was illiterate, the inscriptions on his gravestones were incised by an assistant. Later in his career, his assistants may have been his sons, who were trained as stonemasons. The last gravestone to be signed by Pearson (or his son Samuel) in Pannal graveyard is that of William Trees, dated 1886.[15][18]
