Dr. Stoianovici is Professor of Urology, Mechanical Engineering, and Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the Director of the Urology Robotics Program and teaches Computer Aided Design.
His specialty is surgical robotics in particular robotic hardware. His research is focused on the design, manufacturing, and control of robots for direct image-guided intervention (DIGI). His research is experimentally oriented including extensive hands-on expertise in computer-controlled manufacturing and software development for image-guided navigation. He developed numerous robotic systems and medical devices. His bibliography includes numerous articles and patens of invention. His inventions include a novel backlash-free rotary transmission (Ball Worm), a pneumatic stepper motor (PneuStep), and a fully actuated MRI-stealth robot (MrBot).
Dr. Stoianovici serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Endourology, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Aided Surgery, Minimally Invasive Therapy & Allied Technologies, is the Executive Director of the Engineering & Urology Society, and serves on National Institute of Health study sections.
