Instant restaurant

In the instant restaurant round, each episode focused on one team's day of shopping, cooking, hosting and serving opposing teams and judges a three-course dinner. (Entrée, Main and Dessert). All teams give their 'instant restaurant' a name and theme, and will need to decorate the room/space and table setting to match that theme. Teams may only start cooking three hours before the other teams arrive at their house. After the team served all three meals to the judges and their opposition, each team gave them a score out of ten for the overall performance (i.e. food, service, entertainment, etc.). Afterwards, each judge gave a score out of ten for each of the three dishes, totalling a highest possible score of 100 (40 from guest teams and 60 from judges)

Round 1

  • Episodes 1 to 5
  • Airdate — 1-5 September
  • Description — The first five teams are introduced to the competition in the first round of Instant restaurants. One team was represented a state or territory. After all five teams have cooked, an elimination was held at the end of the final restaurant. The lowest scoring team was eliminated.

  • Description — The second group start their Instant Restaurant round. The same rules from the previous round apply and the lowest scoring team is eliminated.

People's Choice 1: Medieval Banquet Challenge

  • Location — Brisbane's Central Park, QLD
  • Description — The teams were challenged cook a feast for guests at a Medieval themed event. To fit with the theme, teams cooked with coal stoves and no electrical items were allowed. People's Choice was awarded to the team earning the most votes being safe from two eliminations. The two weakest teams selected by Pete and Colin are sent to the first Sudden Death Cook-Off, where one is eliminated.

People's Choice 2: Pop-up Cinema

  • Location — Carriageworks, Eveleigh
  • Description — The teams are challenged to cook a family dinner box, consisting of one main element and two accompanying sides for 300 people attending a pop-up cinema event. Moviegoers will taste the boxes and vote for their favourite meals and team with the most votes will be saved from the next two eliminations, while the two weakest teams selected by Pete and Colin are sent to the Sudden Death Cook-Off, where one is eliminated.

People's Choice 3: Picnic Challenge

  • Description — Teams were tasked with putting together incredible picnic baskets for around 200 people to enjoy in Centennial Park. The public were asked to vote for their favourite. The judges once again sent the two weakest teams to Sudden Death.

Ultimate Instant Restaurant

  • Episodes 17 to 21
  • Airdate — 25 to 29 September
  • Description — For the start of the finals round, the Top 5 teams head around the country once again in an Ultimate Instant Restaurant round. All teams have to cook two dishes of each course (entree, main and dessert) for their fellow finalists and judges for scoring. Guests have a choice of choosing one of the options per course while the judges Pete and Manu each taste one of the two options. The lowest scoring team is eliminated as the remaining four teams are ranked into the semifinals.

Grand Final

  • Description — In the final cook-off for the series, the top 2 teams face-off in the ultimate Grand Final. Teams cook a five course meal and serve 20 plates of each course to all eliminated teams, friends and family. Guest judges returned for the final verdict of awarding the $250,000 prize to the winners. Teams also wear chef attire and have their Instant Restaurant represented.
