Sri Nihal Jayasinghe (veteran film director, lyricist, screenplay writer)
Sri Nihal Jayasinghe was born on 25th January 1942 in Hanwella Baptist Church Estate and later moved to "Rock Wood" area, Kurundu Estate(Cinnamon Garden), Colombo 7 with his parents. He was educated at St. Joseph's College, Colombo and entered the Law School in 1960 to study as a barrister. .He was introduced to cinematography there, studied law and chose cinematography as his career. Since then, he has been engaged in the Sri Lankan film industry as a lyricist, screenwriter and director.
While he was studying at the law school, he entered the world of stage plays by producing a stage play called "Muhudu Kella". After that, he started directing films in the early 60's. The never-forgettable song "Supun Sandak Nagila" sung by JA Milton Perera/Sujatha Attanayake left in the hearts of the fans. Songs like "Mal Sugande Dam Sugande" sung by Mohdin Beg/Sujatha Attanayake made fans' hearts flutter. He directed many films till now, he was also the screenwriter of most of the films and also composed many film songs. He remained in the film industry without stopping. He wrote songs for about 250 films and all the songs in the film "Thushara" which broke records in Sri Lanka. Another thing that cannot be mentioned about him is that he received the first award in Sri Lanka from Father Oswald Gomis, who was the director of the Catholic Church at that time. In 1980, he directed the Dravidian film "Oru Thalai Kadal" and decided to create a new way of cinema. Jaffna was continuously screened in the peninsula for more than a year. He passed away on 19/07/1998 after 56 years of service to the art of cinema. The intellectual rights of all his works belong to the "Jayasinghe Commemoration Foundation".
