User:SriMesh/Sandbox/Portal:Current events/Canada
The portals use web pages nested within the main web page. So the aspect which looks like a table or front page of a newspaper is really many many web pages which are substituted {{New something article name}}
Read this - it is the best - How the Current events page works
Look at this - the main current events portal international Portal:Current events
The in depth instructions of creating a box portal are here, but no need to read that unless you want to do further tweaks -colours etc as you get into it.
What to know?
[edit]- Wikinews articles are created at wikinews where the in depth news articles for [[1]] are written if you really want to write a news story. Any wikinews articles use a robot to automatically import them to the wikipedia Portal:Current events/Canada Lead stories here are backgrounders to provide links or a lead to existing WP and/or WN articles
- Canada current events have two aspects, the brief introduction to ongoing Canadian news stories - like wikipedia's own headlines. To get an idea of how to begin there check out the other wikipedia news portal which is very active In the news section on the Main Page Candidates. There you will see from the discussions how to name them, how to cite them, how to rate them for importance/inclusion. I have tried to add any Canadian content listed in this worlwide portal to the Portal for Canada, it would be nice to have the content updated almost daily for Canadian important current events.
- The second aspect for the wikipedia Canada current events is the "lead story" for which the portal lagged, and I tried with a couple lately to give it an updated or fresh look. This technically changes daily on other news portals (wikinews and wikipedia main pages) but here as you can see from this link it is sporadic.
How to change lead story
[edit]- Go to this page |portal current events Canada - click on edit page. Now to find out which "nested page" to edit scroll to the bottom of the page...
From here you can see currently the names of the two lead stories featured on the portal:
- Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/Canada defends seal hunt after EU bans sale of seal products
- Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/Canadian hostage released from Nigeria
Open one up to see formatting style. Try to have a not copyrighted and not fair use image included for the lead story, it is nicer that way and way easier for box portals. Robots don't remove them then.
- If I wanted to change the lead story. I would make a new article named...
Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/My new lead story something something
- I would then open up (edit this page) Portal:Current events/Canada/Lead Story and need to substitute my new page - {{Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/My new lead story something something}} into the Portal:Current events/Canada/Lead Story box section.
- I would plunk the new lead story on top of where the old lead story was....in this case old lead...Canadian hostage released from Nigeria, and make sure old lead story is listed in the archives for folks still wanting to read the lead.
- I always listed my citations for the lead in case anyone wanted to know where the facts came from, but didn't provide the references section on the box portal, but they were there in my stories.
- Woo hoo!! new lead story added.
Add just your own new headline
[edit]If I want to add a Recent Headline for May. I have to open up this page . I must substitute a header above my head line remembering to change the date to the appropriate date.
{{Portal:Current_events/Canada/DateHeader2|2009|05|05}}
My new head line in my own words using the relevant wikilinks, not plagiarizing any other news feed. followed by reliable news source link like CBC or Canoe Canada and not Joe's Blog
{{Portal:Current_events/Canada/DateFooter}}
Remember to substitute the footer at the bottom of the new headline as well to keep formatting consistent for the headline.
Currently I tried a small image like the wikipedia main page does for DYK, usually images are not included for the recent headlines section.
New months
[edit]As you can see from the box section named News archives, each month gets its own name. Right now it is |Portal:Current events/Canada/May 2009, soon |Portal:Current events/Canada/June 2009 needs to be made
Quotes
[edit]Suggest new quote here
Currently 10 quotes randomly rotate through the portal.
There are a few different methods used for random rotations, some used on the current events portal different methods on the main Portal:Canada. There are a few pages explaining how to, if you are interested in this aspect.
The box section named In the news
[edit]In the news is the robot controlled box section which imports from wikinews as mentioned above...Portal:Current events/Canada/Events by month
Tasks - in the box section named Things you can do
[edit]Tasks which need to be done is edited on this Portal:Current events/Canada/Taskarticle page.
All sidebars
[edit]These are universal international regarding ongoing events, Recent deaths, Ongoing conflicts, elections, Trials, holidays and ovservances. Click on edit sidebar to access them. These sidebars show up in more places than just portal current events Canada.
