The German Film Award for Best Children's Film (German: Deutscher Filmpreis für den besten Kinderfilm ) is one of the current categories of the German Film Award. It was introduced in the year 2000, as part of additions and changes made for the 50th Anniversary Edition of Germany's national film award.

To qualify for this category, a film needs to be at least 59 minutes long, and labeled by the FSK as "released without age restriction" oder as "released to age 6 or older". Its themes, plot, and artistic direction should be aimed at children below the age of twelve. *

Each year, at least six of the submitted children's films are preselected by a jury consisting mainly of members of the Deutsche Filmakademie. They watch the cinema screenings in the company of children, who's feedback flows into the discussions of the jury. After preselection, all members of the Academy branches for Production, Directing and Screenwriting vote to decide on two nominees. In a third step, the whole Academy votes on the winning film.

The winner currently receives an endowment of 250,000 euros, while the other nominee receives 125,000 euros. Similarly to the categories Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary Film, this endowment doubles as a state-funded subsidy for the film industry, since the prize money has to be spent on the next film project. Producers receive 90 % of the endowment, while directors receive 10 %.

History

[edit]

When it was first introduced, the award was named Deutscher Filmpreis für den besten Kinder- und Jugendfilm, i.e. "Best Children's and Youth Film". This name was kept until 2005, when the youth aspect was dropped and it changed to "Bester programmfüllender Kinderfilm", i.e. "Best Children's Feature Film". From 2014 onwards, it changed to simply Bester Kinderfilm.

In the years before 2000, it had certainly been possible for a family, youth or children's film to be nominated in the Best Fiction Film category, but in practice very few films of this genre received a nomination. This was one of the motivations behind giving these films their own category.

From the beginning, the award for the Best Children's Film was endowed with a significant cash prize. In 2000, the prize for the winner was 500,000 marks, at that time there were no other nominees announced, only preselections submitted to the awards commission. That changed in 2002, when two nominees were announced, with the winner receiving 250,000 other nominee started receiving half the prize money of the winner.
